The Soulbinder’s Gambit – Reviewed
I’m thrilled to share that Marco A. Torres reviewed The Soulbinder’s Gambit as part of his Baldur’s Gate Game Jam 2025 coverage, and his words really made my day! You can read his full review here.
Marco captured what I was going for: “familiar but fun.” He highlighted the adventure’s mix of classic D&D moments, the tavern brawl that kicks things off, the investigation phase where players gather intelligence, and the climactic heist at Lady Eomane’s poetry gala.
I’m especially pleased he called out the NPC cast. I put a lot of thought into Lucky Al (the retired thief seeking redemption), Lady Eomane (a whose cruel poetry readings are a highlight), the rival heist crew, and the tormented soul. These characters were designed to give the DM good roleplay opportunities.
The other goal I was to make sure there was something for all playstyles which he also caught onto: “a little bit of something for every type of D&D player to enjoy.” That was absolutely the goal. Whether your table loves combat, social intrigue, puzzle-solving, or moral dilemmas, there should be moments that shine for everyone.
Marco also praised the encounter design for encouraging “multiple options to progress.” This was also intentional. Heists should reward clever planning and creative problem-solving, not railroad players down a single path. Want to talk your way past the guards? Go for it. Prefer to sneak through the service entrance? That works too. Have a wild plan involving a kenku and a flying machine? Let’s see what happens.
Thank You!
Thanks to Marco for taking the time to review the adventure and for his thoughtful analysis. If you’re curious about The Soulbinder’s Gambit, you can grab it Pay What You Want on the DMs Guild.
And if you run it, I’d love to hear how your heist went!
